It all went down to the wire as Colts miss out!

By Brian Seeney

Gos Colts lost 23-22 to Havant in the Hampshire League Championship Play-off at Rugby Camp this afternoon.
In the end their entire season rested on the last kick of the last game when a penalty right out on the touch line drifted narrowly wide and Havant breathed a sign of relief to win by the tightest margin possible.

Gos travelled with the full Colts' league squad of 26 players with the exception of Tommy Russell who missed the big day as he is recovering from knee ligament damage.

The game was a very hard fought encounter, Gos easily dominating the first half which kept Havant on the back foot for most of the half.

Rarely did the Havant's backs venture into the Gos half due to the excellent work put in by the Gos centres Barney Barnes and Kieran McRoberts, well supported by the back row of Matt Flower, Jason Barnes and Liam Perkins.

The Gos try scorers were Liam Perkins, Josh Whitehead and Aaron Myers with a penalty and conversion from Josh Whitehead and a conversion from Matt Monaghan.

"After being well ahead at the half time, Gos fell asleep at the start of the second half and we allowed Havant back into the game," said Colts manager Graham Bryan.

"We made some poor on-field decisions and there was some ill- discipline which lead to two tries being conceded with one conversion.

"Gos continued to give away very kickable penalties to a Havant player who had his kicking boots on."

Gos finally got back into playing as they did in the first half with an unconverted try from Myers and a superb solo effort from Perkins who took a reverse pass from a scrum supplied by Tom Whyld.

Perkins broke through two tackles to score behind the posts which was converted by Matt Monahan, but then, in the last few minutes, came the Gos penalty miss.

"Congratulations go to Havant on their win but it was certainly no disgrace to Gosport & Fareham Colts to lose," said Graham.

"Calvert (McRoberts), Dai (Whitehead) and myself wish to thank all the members of League Colts and Saxons who have put themselves on the line in all the matches that we have played in.

"Our Colts section is now in the very enviable position of achieving a reputation that is highly respected not only within the county but also outside. The players have the ability to play hard, fair rugby in a sportsmanlike manner."
