Big charity fun day with a ‘blast from the past’ - don’t miss it!
By Brian Seeney
Long time Gos favourites Mark Wells, Steve Emm, Sean Fanning, Paul Maxwell and Fred Dugan will all be dusting off their boots for a rugby league match that will be just as ‘serious' as the earlier game between Portsmouth Seahawks and South London in the Summer Conference Southern Division (1.30pm).
There are some familiar faces likely to feature in the Seahawks line-up - James Wagstaffe, Chris Thompson, Andy Vance, Dane Smallbone and Wes Dugan are all part of the Navy's new rugby league set-up based at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth.
Wells has been putting the Gos vets through their training paces this week in a team that is expected to feature Fred Dugan, Jamie and Richard Daly, Steve and Gary Middleton, 'Fingers' Fackrell, Gary Townes, ‘Flo' Flowers, Dave Armstrong, ‘Ug' Jessup, Trevor McAlister and more!
They will be playing for the Sandra Dugan Memorial Cup in the first of what it is hoped will be a regular fundraiser in memory of Sandra, who sadly lost her fight against cancer in June last year.
The charities to benefit from tomorrow's activities are BLESMA, Combat Stress and The Royal British Legion, the nominated charities of the newly formed Soldiers League, and Fred Dugan's chosen charity of Cancer Research.
The day kicks off with the Navy Women's rugby league team playing Portsmouth University (10.30am) followed by a rugby union match between Tottonians Women and a Gosport & Fareham Barbarians Women's side.
There are just a couple of places available at the evening Gala Dinner & Sporting Auction - anyone interested should call Fred Dugan on 078440 145723 or Lesley Weatherson on 07736 941789.
Said Fred: "We are all looking forward to great day of sport and a great day of fundraising for all the good causes. I hope lots of people will come along and join in all the fun!"
